About WinterWelVaart in Groningen
WinterWelVaart is a special Christmas/winter festival where you can see historic ships that are lit along the canals of Groningen. These ships are decorated with lights, creating a beautiful sight. You can explore the ships, have food at one of the stalls, and sometimes even enjoy live music on board. In 2024 the 17th edition will be held already, so it definitely is a must-visit.
As I live near Groningen, I love to visit it. In 2022, I got to visit it for the first time and had a good time with a friend. In 2024, I hope to visit it again with my boyfriend. It is one amazing event to take a lot of photos, as it looks gorgeous with all the lights!
What can you do at the WinterWelVaart in Groningen?
- Explore the Ships Walk along the canals and visit the historic ships. Each ship has something special, like small concerts, art exhibits, or storytelling sessions. Christmas Shopping The winter market offers handmade crafts, delicious snacks, and unique gifts. It’s the perfect place to find something special for the holiday season. There are activities for all ages, from children to grandparents.

When and where is the WinterWelVaart?
WinterWelVaart usually takes place over a weekend in mid-December before Christmas. In 2024, that will be from the 13th until the 15th of December.
The event is held in the city center of Groningen. It’s easy to reach by foot if you are already in Groningen.
It is held mostly at the: Hoge, Lage and Kleine der A, the Pottebakkersrijge and the Sluiskade.

The best way to reach the place is on foot. It is just a 15-—to 20-minute walk from the train station.
