About WinterWelVaart in Groningen
WinterWelVaart is a special Christmas/winter festival where you can see historic ships that are lit along the canals of Groningen. These ships are decorated with lights, creating a beautiful sight. You can explore the ships, have food at one of the stalls, and sometimes even enjoy live music on board. In 2024 the 17th edition will be held already, so it definitely is a must-visit.
As I live near Groningen, I love to visit it. In 2022, I got to visit it for the first time and had a good time with a friend. In 2024, I hope to visit it again with my boyfriend. It is one amazing event to take a lot of photos, as it looks gorgeous with all the lights!
What can you do at the WinterWelVaart in Groningen?
- Explore the Ships Walk along the canals and visit the historic ships. Each ship has something special, like small concerts, art exhibits, or storytelling sessions. It’s a great way to learn about the maritime history of Groningen. The shippers will invite you onboard! On the official website you can already check out the ships and their history.
Christmas Shopping The winter market offers handmade crafts, delicious snacks, and unique gifts. It’s the perfect place to find something special for the holiday season. There are activities for all ages, from children to grandparents.
Enjoy Live Music During the event, you can listen to local bands, choirs, and other performers. There is even (children’s) theatre, poetry, history, and art. Check out the website for the entertainment.
Taste Winter Treats Try traditional Dutch winter snacks like oliebollen (fried doughnuts), hot chocolate, and Glühwein (mulled wine).

When and where is the WinterWelVaart?
WinterWelVaart usually takes place over a weekend in mid-December before Christmas. In 2024, that will be from the 13th until the 15th of December.
The event is held in the city center of Groningen. It’s easy to reach by foot if you are already in Groningen.
It is held mostly at the: Hoge, Lage and Kleine der A, the Pottebakkersrijge and the Sluiskade.

- Friday: 17.00 – 00.00 (the art route is until 20.00 and the market until 22.00)

How to reach the WinterWelVaart?
The best way to reach the place is on foot. It is just a 15-—to 20-minute walk from the train station.
If you want to park your car, there are many car parks in Groningen.

- Dress warmly! Groningen can be cold in the winter, especially near the water.
