About my trip to Pondicherry
Pondicherry… it is a place I visit yearly, as my boyfriend’s family lives there. And even if they do not live there, I would recommend you to visit it. Pondicherry is gorgeous, international, spiritual and above all, so photogenic.
One of my friends (Pooja) used to live in Pondy and always comes over when we visit India. We always plan a photoshoot in traditional clothes. It is a tradition, and I love doing it with her. So by now, I think I am an expert in finding the best photo spots in Pondicherry. So let me tell you all about it!!
When to visit Pondicherry
The best time to visit Pondicherry is mostly between October and March, when the weather is more comfortable for walking around, exploring White Town, visiting beaches and taking photos without melting into a dramatic little puddle, as it can get sooo hot.
And even during those months, it can get warm. So when I visited Pondicherry in March 2026, our photoshoots would always start at 6 AM in the morning… also, because I can’t stand the heat (whoops).

The perfect weekend in Pondicherry: Where to stay, eat, and explore

1. White Town, Pondicherry
Let’s start with the star of the show: White Town.
This is the Pondicherry you see all over Instagram & TikTok. Yellow colonial buildings, pretty doors, quiet streets, colourful flowers, French street names and that am I in India or Europe? feeling.
White Town is perfect for a slow photo walk. You do not even need a proper plan. Just walk around and you will keep finding beautiful corners. It is crazy how beautiful this part of Pondicherry is.
One street has a yellow wall. The next has pink flowers. Then suddenly there is a cute bicycle. Then a pretty café. Then another yellow wall.
ABT tip: Go early in the morning. The streets are quieter, the light is softer, and you do not have to fight with scooters, cars , tourists and random uncles in the background.
To be honest, these beautiful streets are also what Pondicherry is known for. So nowadays you can find tooo many people wanting to do a photoshoot. So, again, not only because of the heat, but also because of the crowds, start early in the morning. 6AM is not early enough 😉
2. Yellow walls of Pondicherry
I know I already mentioned White Town, but the yellow walls deserve their own section. Because they are everywhere and they are beautiful.
Some are bright yellow, some are mustard yellow, some have white windows, some have flowers hanging over them. They are simple, but they make every photo look cute.
My first photoshoot was at one of the yellow walls and look at the pictures below, I love them!

3. Rock Beach at Promenade
Rock Beach in front of Promenade is one of the most famous places in Pondicherry.
It is not really a beach to swim, mostly because of all the garbage (like everywhere in India). But you always can take nice pictures at the beach.
Again, wake up early for a photoshoot at the beach, maybe even for sunrise. The light is nicer on your face as there is no shade anywhere. There are also not too many people, it is India, so you can’t escape people 😉
This was a photoshoot I did with my boyfriend. He was not happy to wake up early, but the photos turned out to be really nice! These pictures were again made by my friend Pooja 🙂
Lastly: Be careful on the rocks. A cute photo is nice. Falling into the sea with your phone is not part of the itinerary.
4. Cute cafés in White Town
Pondicherry is not only about streets and beaches. It is also full of cute cafés. I can say that I have tried most of the good cafes. If you want to read more about this, you can download my free Pondicherry guide
And let’s be honest: sometimes the real reason we travel is to sit in a pretty café and take photos of our coffee before drinking it. And post it on Instagram afterwards 😉
White Town has many cafés in old colonial-style buildings, with courtyards, colourful walls, tiles, plants and dreamy corners. Perfect for a relaxed break and some very Pinterest-looking photos.
Most photogenic cafes:
- Bread & Chocolate
- Coromandel Cafe
- Hope Cafe

Cafe des Arts used to be super cool with its murals. Now they moved and their decoration is not as good anymore, but their food is amazing. That’s also important, right?;)
5. Auroville
Auroville is a famous place near Pondicherry, and the most iconic spot there is the Matrimandir. It is a big golden dome that has spiritual meaning.
The Matrimandir is very different from the rest of Pondicherry, so it adds something unique to your photos. White Town is colourful and colonial, the beaches are tropical, and Auroville feels peaceful and spiritual. If you go there, I would recommend reading about it before you go. In Pondicherry, you can’t escape seeing signs of it.
You cannot just walk everywhere freely around the Matrimandir, so check the visitor rules before you go. The rules to enter are quite strict. Even if you cannot go, I would recommend visiting Auroville. Just because of the different, free vibe and the cool cafes & restaurants. Auroville does not feel Indian at all.
6. Bharathi Park
Bharathi Park is a nice green spot in Pondicherry and perfect when you need a little break from the sun.
It is not the most dramatic photo spot, but it is peaceful and pretty. Actually some of the best pictures we have taken here. You can take soft, relaxed photos here with trees, benches and greenery in the background.
Also, if you have been walking around White Town for hours, this park will feel like a small gift to your tired feet.
Best time to take photos in Pondicherry
The best time for photos in Pondicherry is early morning or late afternoon.
Morning: Best for White Town, Promenade Beach and quiet streets.
Late afternoon: Best for soft golden light and park photos.
Midday: Best for sweating, squinting and regretting your life choices.
The sun can be strong in Pondicherry, so try to avoid taking too many portrait photos in the middle of the day. Unless you enjoy shiny forehead photography 😉
What to wear for a photoshoot in Pondicherry
Pondicherry is colourful, so outfits that are light, flowy and comfortable work best. But like you have seen my photos, anything works well. So just wear something you feel most confident & comfortable in. I love to wear traditional clothes, as I don’t get the chance much in my home country, the Netherlands. But as traditional clothes tend to be heavy, I love to shoot early in the morning to avoid sweating too much.
Where to stay in Pondicherry
To be completely honest, I have never stayed in a hotel in Pondicherry, as my bf’s family lives there. If you are visiting Pondicherry for the first time, I would recommend staying in or near White Town. This is the prettiest and most practical area, especially if you want to take photos of colourful streets, cute cafés, French-style buildings and the famous yellow walls.
You will also be close to Promenade Beach, restaurants and many of the best photo spots.
If you prefer a quieter stay, you can look near Auroville or Serenity Beach, but you will need transport to reach the centre.
Don't forget to book an activity in Pondicherry!
Last note
Pondicherry is honestly one of the most photogenic places. Maybe I am biased as my bf lived there and I spent quite some time there. But out of all places I have visited on this earth, Pondicherry is quite special.
It has the colourful streets of White Town, beautiful beaches, peaceful churches, an Arabic quarter, cute cafés, the Fisherman’s village, spiritual places, and local Tamil charm. And that is what makes Pondicherry so special. Enjoy your time there!!
