What is the Disgusting Food Museum in Malmö (Sweden) like?!

In 2025, we visited Malmö as a daytrip from Copenhagen. We were walking around when we suddenly saw the 'Disgusting Food Museum', as my boyfriend and I are foodies, we had to visit this museum! In this article, I will share about our experience.

What to expect in this article:

About my trip to Malmö

If you’re planning a day trip from Copenhagen to Malmö, stop everything and add the Disgusting Food Museum to your list. Seriously, this tiny museum is hilarious and we had such a great time.
We loved it… even though some people might vomit…

My boyfriend and I visited Malmö for just one day, and this museum became the highlight. We read everything, smelled everything (tragic mistake), and tried way more foods than anyone should in one day. And best of everything: you can win a prize if you try all the foods!
Challenge accepted… kind of.

What is the Disgusting Food Museum?

It’s exactly what it sounds like: a museum full of the world’s “most disgusting” foods,  from fermented stuff, to spicy extracts to things I didn’t even know were legal. You will also read a whole lot of fun facts that will blow your brain be blown away.

The museum is small but packed with fun facts, bizarre ingredients, and smells you will regret sniffing. Actually, the museum itself smells horribe. After the musem, we actually went to eat something (yes we could still eat 😉 and the smell was in my nose the whole time, I literally went with my nose inside a bag with a Swedish pastry, to forget the smell haha.

Some things actually taste good, like Stinky Tofu, which my friend introduced me to in Taiwan. It smells horrible and when you walk in the markets of Taiwan, it’s like you are walking near a toilet, but the taste is really good! I even bought a magnet, that’s how much I loved it. So not everything tastes bad 🙂

My boyfriend vs the world's spiciest extract

My boyfriend loves spicy food. Like… Indian-level spicy with extra chilli on top and no blinking.
But even he was not ready for their spiciest cayenne extract.

He tried it.
He sweated a lot
He questioned his life choices.
And then he proudly said it was “fine”, but we all knew it wasn’t 😂.

So at the end of the museum, there’s a whole line of foods that you can try. I tried a lot, except for the spicy spices. I’ve been brought up with a Sri Lankan dad and have died of spiciness more often than you can imagine. You can win something when you try every food they have, but I knew I would not survive the chillis, unfortunately!

Where to eat in Malmö

Before or after the museum, it is time for more food, but this time good food xD

We went to a Yemeni restaurant in Malmö. This was actually the first time eating at a Yemeni restaurant together, after wanting to for so long. The food was SO flavourful and delicious. Mandi is always a good idea to eat. This is basically perfect comfort food after traumatising your tastebuds in the museum.

For dessert (or emotional support), we grabbed bubble tea at Le Dante. The Creme Brulee option was recommend by my Danish friend who visited Malmö before. Thank you Marie! The bottom of the drink was the best part and I did not want to stop drinking.

Is Malmö worth a day trip from Copenhagen?

Absolutely! It only takes 35 minutes by train from Copenhagen.

Malmö is super walkable, colourful, and peaceful. Perfect for a relaxed day out. Don’t expect too much, though. My friend already told us we should mostly go there for shopping as it is not super special.

For us, the Disgusting Food Museum was our highlight in Malmö. Otherwise we would have been done quite early.

When is the best time to visit Malmö?

  • Spring & Summer (May–September): This is the time if you like warm weather, outdoor terraces, land ong sunny days. Perfect for walking around the city.
  • Autumn (October–November): Still nice, but colder. Great for museums, cafés and cosy restaurants. We visited in November and had a lot of sun luckily.
  • Winter (December–March): Cold and quiet. Good if you want fewer crowds and cheap prices.

Where to stay in Malmö

If you want to stay overnight, here are good areas:

1. Malmö Central Station area: Perfect for quick trips from Copenhagen. Modern hotels & easy transport.

2. Gamla Staden (Old Town): Very charming, colourful streets, cute cafés. I wish we spent more time here.

3. Västra Hamnen (Western Harbour): Close to the Turning Torso and seaside views. It looked so nice near the harbour with all the boats!

Or go to Copenhagen, but Malmö is cheaper 🙂

Would I go again to Malmö?

To be completely honest, no. It was good for a day and a nice addition to our Copenhagen trip. We absolutely loved the Disgusting Food Museum and I would love to go again in Berlin! But Malmö, was nice for a few hours 🙂 Sweden is large and I can’t wait to visit more towns and show Stockholm to my boyfriend, as I loved it 🙂
