About Stockholm
Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and the largest city in the country, with 1 million inhabitants.
In November I had the chance to visit this awesome city. I had heard many good stories about how fun and cozy the city is, so I had to find out myself! Have you ever heard of Fika? Well when you go to Sweden, you will see it everywhere.
It is basically ‘a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat.’ This sounds beautiful and I can tell you, we made gladly use of it.
I spent 3 full days in the city and had a day trip to Sigtuna, which I will tell more about in a different article. This article will be about the beautiful metro stations in Stockholm.
We randomly found out while reading some things on the internet, so with our 30 euros public transport pass (for 72 hours), we could go anywhere.
On our second day, we had a small hunt and in this article, I will tell you about the prettiest ones.
1. Stadion Metro Station - Stockholm
The rainbow on the platform of Stadion Metro Station is my favorite I think! Rainbows are always a moment of joy and I felt the same standing here on this platform.
Each year Östermalms IP serves as the main festival area for the Stockholm Pride festival. By coincidence, the nearby subway station (Stadion) happens to have a beautiful rainbow in vivid colors painted against the bright blue of the station’s cave walls to welcome festival-goers.
The rainbow is not difficult to find. When you get in (red) line 14 from T-Centralen, it is just 2 stops away. When you get out of the metro, you will instantly see the rainbow, as it is positioned between two platforms.

2. T-Centralen - Stockholm
When you are in Stockholm and take the metro, you will most likely come across T-Centralen, as it is the central point. The art here feels like you are in a cold climate, celebrating winter.
“I think Per Olof Ultvedt wanted to create a calming atmosphere because this is a station where people are in a hurry. They are changing trains to another metro line or another commuter train. I suppose the idea was that the blue color and simple motifs – stylized flowers and leaf creepers – give passengers pause and a chance to clear their mind”.
It was difficult to find the spot immediately, as T-Centralen is also a large metro station. We did find it right away, so if you don’t find it, ask people. They must know.
I have a good memory here, as we were practicing with our cameras. I never thought I would be fine with sitting on the ground at a metro station 😉 Taking photos and seeing how our shutter speed was reacting. Good memories 🙂
3. Tekniska Hogskolan Metro station - Stockholm
Tekniska Hogskolan Subway Station is a cool metro station. When you first walk here, you don’t think ‘wow’, but the photo I took here, looks out of this world, so surreal.
Don’t you think it is weird it is not a bit more crowded at the metro stations of Stockholm? Or maybe we were there at the right time of the year (November).
It was created by the Swedish artist Lennart Mörk and you will definitely see it right away you step out of the metro. It is only 1 stop further from Stadion Metro Station (red line, number 14) and 3 stops from T-Centralen (the red line, number 14).
4. Tensta Metro Station - Stockholm
The cutest metro station in Stockholm on this list is definitely Tensta Metro Station. It is not just 1 artwork, but you will find a couple. You can see penguins, sun, elephants, birds…
I love the message behind this metro station,
Artist Helga Henschen, together with Arne Sedell and her brother Lars, spent over a year decorating the station’s platform with a colorful display of animal sculptures and stylized leaves against a bright white wall. Since Tensta has always had a majority of residents who immigrated to Sweden, the artists wanted the station to feel welcoming no matter where your roots are, explains art guide Marie Andersson. The various pieces are called “A rose for the immigrants”, “Solidarity”, “Kinship”. The words written around the station are a celebration of all the people from different cultures living in Tensta”.
One tip: You can do an underground metro art ride with a local guide. This must be so much fun and very informative!
There was a good, welcoming vibe at this metro station and I could not stop taking photos of all the cute elements. You will have to walk around a little to see it all.
Tensta Metro Station is 11 stops from T-Centralen (Blue Line, number 10). So you will have to sit in the metro for a bit. The art is very easy to find, once you get out of the metro.
5 & 6. Kungstradgarden & Rådhuset Metro Station - Stockholm
There were a couple of Metro Stations in Stockholm that we found online, but did not find that interesting in real life. Kungstradgarden Metro Station is one of them, next to Rådhuset Station.
Rådhuset Station… is just red and it feels like you are walking in a cave. Kungstradgarden has some nice art, but it was not really my thing. But if you like these kinds of vibes, you definitely have to hop on a metro and stop at these stations as well!
Lastly, there were two metro stations that we saw online, but that we did not visit: Akalla Station and Solna Centrum Station. After all the awesome metro stations, we expected these metro stations to be not interesting enough.
Kungstradgarden and Rådhuset are just 1 stop from T-Centralen (Blue Line, number 10 or 11).
