About the 10.000 Buddhas's Temple (Man Fat Tsz)

The 10,000 Buddhas Temple (Man Fat Tsz) is unique and peaceful in Hong Kong. It is located in the district of Sha Tin and has so many golden Buddha statues. The funny thing is that they all have a different face, pose, or expression, so the walk up the hill (yes, the temple is up a hill), is enjoyable. The temple was built in the 1950s, but no monks live here. It is a sacred place for visitors.

In January 2025, I visited the temple with a friend, and it turned out to be one of my favorite experiences in Hong Kong. It wasn’t crowded, it is free to visit (very important for a Dutchie 😉 ), the climb was not too difficult, and the atmosphere was so peaceful! (Very different as the Buddha at Lantau Island).
In this article, I will share more about why you have to visit the Man Fat Tsz.

1. Unique and enjoyable climb

The temple is located on a hill, and to reach it, you need to walk up a path of around 400 steps, which takes about 20 minutes. It was not too difficult, as there are two ways you can go up, by stairs or a steep road, which are next to each other. So that is quite easy. Only the last part can be quite steep, but just take your time.

While this may sound tiring, the hundreds of golden Buddha statues along the path make it a unique experience. Each statue has a different pose and facial expression. Some Buddhas made me laugh, while others made me wonder what they expressed.

I found myself stopping every few steps to take photos, look at the unique Buddhas, and see the nice view.
And some Buddhas hold objects like bowls, staffs, or animals, while others have completely different expressions. The climb itself is part of the 10.000 Buddhas Temple, and it never felt boring!

2. Peaceful and not too crowded

The thing I loved most about the 10,000 Buddhas Temple was how peaceful it was. Unlike Big Buddha on Lantau Island, which was so crowded with tourists, this temple was quiet and calm. When we visited in January 2025, there were only a few other visitors, this really felt like a hidden spot away from Hong Kong’s busy streets.

You have to walk up a little, but if you want to visit a local temple with a nice view, this is the place to go to.

3. A Temple unlike any other

The 10,000 Buddhas Temple is not like other temples in Hong Kong. It feels like an open-air art gallery with endless Buddha statues and a nice view of Hong Kong from behind.

There are also other beautiful structures, including a nine-story pagoda, animals.

4. A stunning view from the top

After climbing up to the temple, you will see a nice view of the surrounding area. The temple is located on a hill, so from the top, you can see Sha Tin and the greenery around it. It’s a great spot to rest, take photos, and enjoy the fresh air
