Discovering the Yurt experience
What exactly is a yurt, you may think? Originating from the nomadic tribes of Central Asia (mostly Mongolia), a yurt is a portable, circular tent traditionally covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by nomads.
Today, it’s embraced worldwide for its simplicity, versatility, and connection to nature. At Winterwoods, located in the serene beauty of Drenthe (north of the Netherlands), these yurts offer a unique and cozy accommodation experience like no other.
Invitation to stay at Winterwoods
My friend and I visited Winterwoods at the beginning of February ’24.
If it wasn’t for the invitation I received, I don’t think we would have ever thought of staying here, which is a pity.
How grateful am I, that I could enjoy this wonderful adventure while being invited by them and making content?
This was the first time, I had an overnight stay at an accommodation, all for my this blog. It feels like the hard work and love that I put into A Born Traveller the last years, has turned out. All because of you also, so thank you for that!
Inside the yurt
You can find a lot of things inside your yurt, I imagined it to be smaller than it actually is!
- You will find a big double bed and two one-person beds. Some blankets, pillows
- A cooking set, with cutlery. If you need any spices or oil, you can borrow this
- A fireplace to make your fire
- A small litter bin
- Two lights for in the night
- A jerrycan with water
Activities at Winterwoods
What is even more fun at Winterwoods, are all the activities that can be done. Most of them are included in the price, except for the ‘Zweethut’
These are the activities that can be done:
- Hot tub & Sauna
- Zweethut (‘Sweaty Cabin’) – click here for an explanation
- Yoga & Meditation
- Baking bread with others
- Iced water dipping (Wim Hof method)
- Wood cutting
- Mountain biking
- Other games they come up with
We did not go into the sauna, zweethut, and did not dip in ice-cold water. Maybe in the future 🙂
Nature near Winterwoods
It was amazing to start our day with yoga, and then have a stroll through the forest. I can tell you, nature in Drenthe is beautiful. That’s why, I have written about 7 amazing sites in Drenthe, which you can read here
One of the most memorable moments was encountering two majestic deer crossing our path during the forest stroll, a surreal experience that added a touch of magic to our adventure. Coincidence, we were with the two of us and saw 2 deer?
More activities in Drenthe?
Essential tips for your Winterwoods adventure
Before going on your own Winterwoods adventure, there are a few things you simply can’t forget to take with you. You will receive a list from them, that you can check out, but these things I forgot 🙂
- Firstly, make sure to pack sturdy, waterproof shoes to navigate the muddy terrain with ease. When it rains, it can be challenging to walk around.
- Don’t forget to bring along a good book, as there will be time to chill.
- Plenty of warm clothing to stay cozy, for when it does not work out make a fire in your yurt and you will be cold. Especially in the mornings, when you get out of your bed and its warm blankets on the cold floor.
- Take a power bank, as there is not much electricity on the site.
The comfortable beds at Winterwoods ensure a restful night’s sleep after a day of exploration. So it is not necessary to take any of that stuff.
