About Porto

Porto is located in northern Portugal along the Douro River. As the second-largest city in Portugal, it combines old-world charm with a lively modern atmosphere.

The historic center of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its narrow, winding streets and colorful buildings. Iconic landmarks like the Clérigos Tower and the São Bento Railway Station, with its beautiful tile murals, highlight the city’s architectural beauty. The Livraria Lello bookstore is often called one of the most beautiful in the world (but is also really crowded).

The city’s riverside area, (Ribeira), is perfect for strolls, dining at outdoor cafes, and enjoying the scenic views of the Douro River and the Dom Luís I Bridge.

1. Prettiest city in Portugal

From my visit, I can say that Porto is the prettiest city in Portugal. I have been to many places in Portugal, but there is something unique in Porto.

I still think back of Porto with warm feelings. Whether it has to do with the architecture, azulejos, many things that you can do. Or maybe it is the good vibe, the lovely weather and incredible views? I can’t say, but I am in love with Porto!

I think everyone would love Porto and that’s why you have to visit it. Just make sure you visit outside peak season, as it can get crowded. We visited in January (2022) and there was a huge line at the Livraria Lello bookstore. I can’t imagine how crowded it would be during peak season.

2. Beautiful architecture in Porto

When I visited Porto, I was enchanted by the beautiful architecture and the stunning azulejos, or ceramic tiles, that adorned many buildings. I even bought a small azulejo, and I can’t wait to hang it in my future house.

Walking through the historic Ribeira District, I admired the colorful houses and narrow, cobbled streets that gave the city its unique charm.

Even the Coro da Sé Catedral do Porto is a Catedral filled with gorgeous azulejos and a great view.

Next to that, the São Bento train station has gorgeous architecture, with its walls covered in blue and white azulejos depicting scenes from Portuguese history. We took from here a train to Lisbon, which is 4 hours away.

Igreja do Carmo is, next to Capela das Almas are more churches with gorgeous azulejos and architecture. When you are in Porto, you must have seen some azulejos!

As I wandered around, I noticed the azulejos on old churches and even on ordinary buildings. Taking pictures with it, was my favorite thing to do. It’s a great place for beautiful Instagrammable pictures 😉

3. Amazing views of Porto

Porto offers some spectacular views. The city’s hilly landscape and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge provide numerous vantage points to take in its stunning scenery and the orange rooftops.

Climbing the Clérigos Tower rewards visitors with panoramic views of the city and the Douro River.
For a different perspective, head to the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar where you can enjoy a breathtaking vista of Porto’s skyline, especially magical at sunset.

One of my favorites is also Coro da Sé Catedral do Porto. Which is a beautiful Catedral, but also has a gorgeous view on top.

4. Porto's good and chill vibe

I loved how chill the vibe in Porto was, especially near the river. The Douro River is the heart of Porto and has a relaxed and inviting feel.
The riverside area, called the Cais da Ribeira, is great for easy walks, eating at outdoor cafes, and watching the traditional Rabelo boats on the water. If you are lucky there are some markets.

In the evening, the area is lively with street performers and busy bars, but it still keeps a laid-back vibe. A sunset cruise on the Douro is a peaceful way to enjoy the city’s beauty.

5. Romantic getaway

How much I missed my boyfriend while walking here? A looot!
Porto is an incredibly romantic city, perfect for couples.
The charming streets, cozy wine cellars, and scenic viewpoints create an enchanting backdrop for romance.

Take a walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge at dusk, enjoy dinner in a restaurant near the river, or sit and watch the sunset from the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal. Every corner of Porto seems designed to inspire love and affection.
I would love to return to Porto in the future with my boyfriend 🙂

6. Great wines

Porto is famous for its port wine, and if you like that, you have to try it!
Bummer that I don’t drink (much), so I can not give you great tips.

But I have read that the wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river, offer tours and tastings. You can try different types of port wine and learn about how it’s made.
Most people know about Porto wine. And just like you need to try a hamburger in Hamburg, you need to try port in Porto 🙂
