Hi there! In case you were wondering, Taiwan is super easy to travel around. This is if you have the right tool in your pocket. And no, I’m not talking about Google Maps (though that helps too). I’m talking about the EasyCard! A must-have in Taiwan, thank me later 🙂
What to expect in this article:
About my trip to Taiwan
I visited Taiwan in January 25, and wow, I fell in love with this country! I never expected to visit Taiwan in 2025, but since my friend wanted to visit her family for Chinese New Year, I had to meet her there.
But we also travelled around for some time. And let me tell you, Taiwan is super easy to travel around, if you have the right tool in your pocket: the amazing EasyCard.
You might not understand why I am so hyped about the card now, but at the end of the article you definitely will! Here are 5 reasons why you should absolutely get one as soon as you land in Taiwan.

1. You can use it almost everywhere
The first reason is that you can use it of course, for all public transport, but that’s not all!
The Easycard is an all-access pass for everyday life in Taiwan. You can use it for:
MRT, buses and local trains
Convenience stores like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Hi-Life (7-Eleven and FamilyMart were my fav!)
Maokong Gondola, Taipei Zoo, and some ferries
Vending machines
How easy is this!? So don’t put too little money on it, because you will definitely use it
Don't forget to book a fun activity!
2. No more small change stress
One of the most annoying things in life? Digging around for coins while everyone behind you is waiting. With the EasyCard, you just top it up once and forget about it. Whether it is on a bus in Taichung or buying a drink from a vending machine…
3. You’ll save money
Another big bonus is that the EasyCard, also saves you money. Using it for MRT and bus rides gives you around 20% off. Especially when we wanted to take the bus from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake, we had to pay the full price if we wanted to pay ‘normally’, but got a big discount if we would use the EasyCard. So again, make sure you put enough money on the card.
This Dutchie loves discounts. And be honest, more savings = more bubble tea! Win-win.

4. The cards are ridiculously cute
This is honestly my favorite reason. The EasyCard comes in so many designs that it is almost impossible to pick just one. From Hello Kitty and Pokémon to Taiwan’s own Formosan black bear, there’s a card for everyone. Everything in Taiwan is just so cuteee, I don’t understand why not more countries do it.
Did you know that some people even collect them? I would have loved to buy more than one as well.
5. Refundable (or the best souvenir!)
At the end of your trip, you can return your EasyCard at the bigger MRT stations and get your unused balance refunded. In Taiwan, they think of everything really…
But honestly? I’ve kept it. It’s flat, cute, and fits in your wallet; it is basically the perfect Taiwan souvenir. Hopefully I can take it with me next time I go to Taiwan, although I will most likely buy another one then 🙂
Where to buy your EasyCard
Good news: it’s super easy to get an EasyCard. You can pick one up at:
Taoyuan International Airport (perfect if you want to go straight on the MRT to Taipei)
Any MRT station in Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung
Convenience stores like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, and OK Mart – this is also where I got it! And, in every store they have different designs. So I went to at least 3 stores, before I bought mine 🙂
They usually cost around NT$100–150 (just the card, no credit). After that, you top it up at MRT machines or convenience stores. I’d recommend starting with at least NT$500 so you’re set for a few days.

Final thoughts on the EasyCard
The EasyCard isn’t just a convenience and super duper cute, it’s your way to travel Taiwan the easy way. From discounted MRT rides to sushi for breakfast, purchases at 7-Eleven, this little card will save you time, money, and a whole lot of stress.
If only we had this in the Netherlands, then I’d happily trade in my OV-chipkaart! Taiwan is living in the future.
So yes, grab one the moment you arrive. If there is any reason why people should not buy the card, I would love to hear the reasons why. Comment below then!
