Last weekend I visited the province of Zeeland (in the Netherlands) for the first time and noticed there were many garden terraces (which are basically outside terraces with nature). So we visited eventually 3 of them and think they were all pleasant. I never knew I needed a 'tuinterras' this much!
Jells Lunchcafé & Tuinterras- Middelburg
Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland and has 48.000 inhabitants. I have two garden terraces in this city, but only went to Jells.
We ended up here twice because the first time we only had a drink. Just because there were so many good dishes on the menu, my friend desperately wanted to go back to try it. Sure, I don’t mind having good food!
This is basically a fun spot surrounded by plants, trees, and flowers and with a beautiful view over the immense church. The staff is working very hard, but are still super kind. Good to know that you can also sit inside in case it rains.
Most importantly, the food is to die for. I first had an ice tea with mint leaves inside. I think that is a fun and delicious difference from a normal ice tea. I am an ice tea and tea lover, so I mostly choose this when I go out.
Next to that, we both had flatbread, with halloumi, olives, capsicum, and more. Mouth-watering! The flatbread was so soft and rich of taste that I could have eaten that alone and I would be happy.
Watch the video below for a better impression.
Suster Anna - Veere
Veere is a small town, only 13 minutes from Middelburg. We read many stories about this tiny town, so next to Middelburg we knew we had to visit this. It’s photogenic with cute houses and beautiful little allies. A must-visit!
Suster Anna (or Sister Anna) has been here since 1999 across the beautiful town hall.
You can sit inside, in front of the building, or on the terrace in the back. Of course, you have to try to visit the garden terrace in the back.
We did not try any food, as we wanted to try a ‘Zeeuwse Bolus’, this is a specialty of Zeeland and there was a store selling these in the same street. But we did have a nice drink.
They are selling many kinds of pancakes, even with ‘Zeeuwse bacon.’ I have no clue what that means, but if I will come back here, I am definitely going to try that.
Zeeuwse Hemel - Zierikzee
Last but not least, the Zeeuwse Hemel, aka ‘Zeeuwse Heaven/heaven in Zeeland.’
Zierikzee is 40 minutes from Middelburg, but also charming, and definitely, a good spot to go to. I saw many tiny stores selling jewelry, postcards, and other small goodies. I had to control myself from buying too much!
This is the same at Zeeuwse Hemel, which is a shop, restaurant, and hotel in one. Yes, you read that correctly, you can even sleep here!
Next to that, you can have your food in the garden. Perfect on a sunny summer day (if we have these in the Netherlands). We had a pretty ‘simple, but tasteful lunch, with slices of bread, hummus, and aubergine.
There are many more delicious dishes, not even for lunch, but also for dinner or as a snack. When we were eating, there were a couple of ladies trying out different wines, which sound lovely as well. I am happy with a mocktail!
Have you visited any garden terraces in Zeeland which you would like to add to this list? Let me know in a comment!
