What to expect in this article:

About York
York! A city I did not expect much of, but impressed me a lot. In 2024, I visited my sister who lives near Doncaster and saw some good reviews about York. Of course, I wanted to go, especially for the ‘Harry Potter street’, but more about that later.
York is a charming city in England. For history, and a beautiful cathedral, this is your place to go. It is a good weekend trip.
But before I dive into the details, here’s a little tip: avoid visiting York on a Saturday. It can get really crowded. So, plan your trip on a weekday for the best experience or come early…

Why visit York?
Well, the actual question should be, why should you not visit York? Although I am lucky my sister is living close to Manchester, I would have liked to visit the city even if she would not living there. It is not the most famous place, but if you want to visit all the Harry Potter places in UK (like me), this place you should not skip.
Anyway, York is a city with old-world charm, photogenic narrow cobbled streets, and historic buildings. I have been to a couple cities in the UK, which are all great. But from cities like Sheffield, Leeds or Birmingham, I do miss some cosy vibes, which you can find back in York. I loved Manchester, as it also has the modern touch with some old vibes, but York is much smaller and easier to explore.
My Butterbeer experience
In the famous street ‘The Shambles’ I found a store (called 9 3/4 of course) where we could try Butterbeer, which is super famous from Harry Potter. So we had to try it! I don’t drink beer, but the lady said it is sweet.
Yes, it is sweet, but not really my thing. I am happy I got to share it with my sister and her bf. Still, I am happy I got to try it once in my life. I can cross it off my Harry Potter list.
Top spots to visit in York
The Shambles: I spoke about it before, this iconic street is a dream come true for Harry Potter fans.It looks a bit like Diagon Alley! You’ll find plenty of Harry Potter-themed stores here, selling wands, robes, and other wizarding goodies.
The Shop That Must Not Be Named: A must-visit for every Potterhead! This shop is filled with official Harry Potter merchandise… Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s worth stepping inside and get excited. But be aware it is a bit pricey in my opinion.
York Minster: York Minster is a beautiful cathedral. It has a peaceful vibe and there is a lot of grass in front of it, so many people were chilling here.
The Shambles Market: This is a cute little market where you can find all sorts of things. From foods to handicrafts to jewelry. I loved wandering through the stalls and soaking up the lively atmosphere.
Clifford’s Tower: For a bit of history, climb up to Clifford’s Tower. The view from the top is supposed to be incredible!

Distances from nearby cities
Manchester: About 70 miles (113 km) – around a 1.5-hour drive or a direct train ride.
Sheffield: About 50 miles (80 km) – around a 1-hour drive or train ride.
Leeds: Just 25 miles (40 km) away – only a 30-minute train ride.
From London: Just under 2 hours by train (direct from King’s Cross).
Where to park in York?
If you’re driving to York, there are plenty of parking options. York Park and Ride is a great choice if you want to avoid the city-center traffic. But you can also use one of the city’s car parks, like Marygate Car Park or Shambles Q-Park.
Next to that you have NCP Car Park York Tanner Row. This is central, but busy on weekends.
Do I recommend York?
I think it is clear by now, I loved York and I definitely recommend it.
York exceeded all my expectations. I loved exploring the city with my sister, her boyfriend, and his brother. The Harry Potter vibes, the historic charm, the busy with cosy vibes around the Cathedral. and the cute little market made it great.
Just remember—avoid Saturdays, bring your Harry Potter wand and let everything soak in.
So, if you’re planning your next trip, make sure York is on your list. After all, who wouldn’t want to visit a real-life Diagon Alley!
